History
Founded in 1881 by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad Company, Temple was a prominent dividing point along the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. In the town’s early years, tents and shacks were the most popular form of housing and saloons were on every corner, spilling out tough, early Wild West looking characters. Nicknamed Tanglefoot, Temple’s muddy streets were constantly traversed by drunks in the early years, making walking around town quite a challenge. By 1893, the town had cleaned itself up and organized a schooling system. That same year, Temple locals began holding the annual Temple Stag Party, which was a celebration that the town’s most prominent men attended, until 1923.
